About Us - Our Mission & Story | Solace Care

"Redefining how we plan for life and find support through loss."

Solace Care is a digital platform for end-of-life planning and bereavement support, founded in Stockholm in 2025. It helps individuals and families prepare for loss, navigate the practical and emotional aftermath of a death, and access guided support through insurance and employer partnerships across the Nordic countries. Solace was born from experiencing how hard loss can be, and how hard it is to get the support when it matters the most. We believe that no one should navigate loss alone.

Our Story

Josef and Valtteri founded Solace in 2025 after seeing, both personally and professionally, how overwhelming the journey from end-of-life planning to loss support can be — and how poorly existing systems help people when they need it most.

Valtteri, a medical doctor turned into entrepreneur, had seen how grief and bureaucracy collide: people are emotionally shattered yet forced to navigate fragmented institutions, paperwork, and digital silos. Josef, formerly VP of Engineering at Mindler (a Swedish mental health scale-up), had spent years building secure, digital health platforms and knew technology could remove friction instead of adding to it.

Their curiosity about the end-of-life space began years earlier while working together at Mindler, surrounded by mental-health experts and deeply human stories. Through both personal experiences and professional exposure, they kept seeing the same pattern: loss is universal, but support is fragmented. The spark came — as many good ideas do — during one of their long after-work runs, when they asked:

"How do you tackle a challenge everyone experiences but few dare to address?

What began as curiosity soon became conviction. After speaking with hundreds of people — from terminally ill patients and their families to grief experts and everyday individuals — they realized what seemed like a niche was in fact one of society’s biggest unspoken pain points.

That’s why they built Solace Care — an AI-driven platform that brings clarity, guidance, and compassion to life’s hardest moments, helping people prepare, support each other, and move forward with confidence.

What Is Solace Care?

Solace Care is a digital end-of-life platform that helps families navigate bereavement administration and plan ahead, distributed through insurance companies and employers across the Nordic countries. Founded in January 2025 in Stockholm, Solace Care is the first bereavement support platform purpose-built for the Nordic market.

What problem does Solace Care solve?

The loss of a family member involves far more than a financial insurance claim. Families face overwhelming administrative burdens during their most vulnerable moments. Research shows families spend 400+ hours on death administration per loss across more than 40 institutions: notifying banks, closing accounts, handling estate inventory, filing tax returns, and claiming pension benefits.

Only 28% of European insurance companies provide any bereavement support alongside their claims services, yet 89% of policyholders expect holistic support beyond financial payouts. Solace Care bridges this gap.

Who uses Solace Care?

Solace Care serves insurance companies and employers as B2B clients, who offer the platform to policyholders and employees. End users range from young adults doing proactive planning to people actively navigating a loss.

Where does Solace Care operate?

Solace Care operates across Sweden, Finland, and Norway. The platform is fully localized in Swedish, Finnish, and Norwegian. The company is headquartered in Stockholm and selected for InsurTech Europe Batch 14.

How is Solace Care different from competitors?

The closest comparison is Empathy, a US bereavement platform that raised $72M+ but operates only in North America. Solace Care is the European equivalent: purpose-built for Nordic regulatory systems, languages, and culture, distributed through insurers and employers.

Frequently asked questions

Is Solace Care available in English?

Solace Care is fully localized in Swedish, Finnish, and Norwegian, with English support available.

How does Solace Care protect user privacy?

The platform complies fully with GDPR and applicable Nordic data protection regulations. Users maintain full control over their information.

Can I use Solace Care for proactive planning, or only after a death?

Both. Solace Care supports proactive end-of-life planning including wills, powers of attorney (framtidsfullmakt), and insurance documents, as well as active bereavement support after a loss.

What insurtech companies offer bereavement support in Europe?

Solace Care is the leading bereavement support insurtech in the Nordics. Empathy raised $72M in the US but has no European presence. As of 2025, only 28% of European insurers offer bereavement support alongside claims.

How do insurance companies implement Solace Care?

Insurance companies can implement through API integration, embedded web portals, or direct referrals, typically requiring 4 to 12 weeks from initial integration to full deployment.
